Summer School 2011

Following the success of the previous IEA Greenhouse Gas Programme (IEAGHG) Summer Schools in Kloster Seeon, Germany 2007; Tigh-Na-Mara, Vancouver Island, Canada; Lorne, Australia, and Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway last year, we are pleased to announce the 2011 Summer School which will be held in Champaign, Illinois, USA hosted by the University of Illinois - Advanced Energy Technology Initiative and the Sequestration Training and Education Program (STEP), from the 18th – 22nd of July.

IBDP_QuadImageIllinois State Geological Survey
The ISGS is a premier State Geological Survey serving the needs of Illinois with earth science information relevant to the State's environmental quality, economic vitality, and public safety. Some 200 scientists and technical support staff conduct basic and applied research in geology, compile geologic maps, and gather and manage the state's geological data.

The 2011 IEA-GHG Summer School in Champaign, Illinois was once again an exceptional educational experience for attendees.  This year's Summer School features world experts on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as well as a visit to the Illinois Basin - Decatur Project (IBDP) site, an actively injecting sequestration project in Decatur, Illinois.

Champaign is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis and is home to the University of Illinois - a world leader in research, teaching, and public engagement.  The University opened for business in 1868 as the Illinois Industrial University. Renamed the University of Illinois in 1885, it is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862.

The local host organization, STEP, is an approved technology transfer center of the United States Department of Energy - National Technology Laboratory.  STEP also operates in cooperation with the Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium, which is funded to assess the safety and efficiency of carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in the Illinois Basin.

The IBDP site is being developed to capture and store one million tonnes of CO2 over a three year period.  The captured CO2 is produced during ethanol fermentation at Archer Daniels Midland Co., the site host location.  The results of this project will provide information for future development of CCS opportunities throughout the world.  Students attending this year's Summer School will have the opportunity to visit this working CCS site will be exposed to all aspects of a CSS project including:  capture, compression and dehydration, monitoring, verification and accounting, well construction, data gathering and management, project development, site best practices, and project management.
