Interactive graph to assess the global technical and economic potential for BE-CCS

The IEAGHG has performed a study to determine the global potential for combining biomass with CCS technologies (BE-CCS) up to 2030 and 2050. The assessment includes six BE-CCS technology routes for the production of power and biofuels in combination with CCS. The study reports on the technical potential (the potential that is technically feasible and not restricted by economical limitations) and economic potential (the potential at competitive cost compared to alternatives).

However, results for the global potential for biomass and CCS are rather sensitive to assumptions and uncertainties in data. The quantitative results of the technical and economic potential are therefore presented in an interactive graph where the most relevant variables that influence the outcomes of the study can be varied. These variables are: CO2 price, biomass price, discount rate, cost of CO2 transport and storage, sustainability criteria for biomass supply, CO2 storage capacity estimates and exclusion of possible storage reservoirs.

The interactive graph also allows choosing for which region and year the BE-CCS potential is shown. In addition, the unit can be changed to express the potential in net negative emissions (in Gt CO2 equivalents) or in energy terms (in exajoule - EJ). Under the "advanced graph settings" the position of variables in the graph can be changed.
