This study reviewed the risk of induced seismicity at CO2 storage sites. The phenomenon has multiple causes including waste water disposal, geothermal energy and mining. Natural seismicity is also a widespread occurrence and can detected in the same regions as industrial activities associated with induced seismicity. Consequently the detection of any seismicity has to be clearly distinguished. This study has compiled evidence from microseismic detection techniques used at demonstration CO2 storage sites and what can be interpreted from them.
It has also examined other causes of induced seismicity notably the widespread practice of waste water disposal. The management and control measures that have been employed are discusse. Examples of outreach measures used to explain and reassure local communities that are affected by seismicity are included.
